Brentwood win 5-4 on penalties.
Brentwood scraped into the 4th round of the county cup after a penalty shootout at Mayesbrook Park, and they will now play League 2 Colchester United at the Arena on a date to be confirmed.
Blues looked to be coasting to a comfortable win when they were leading 3-1 with less than two minutes of normal time remaining, but West Essex staged a stirring comeback, scoring twice to send the tie straight to penalties.
Joe Lefley made it 3-2 from the penalty spot in the 89th minute and, deep into stoppage time, West Essex forced a corner, following which the ball came to home goalkeeper Dan Russell, who had come forward to support the attack, and his cross shot was heading towards the top corner before Anthony Page tipped the ball over the bar.
Following the next corner kick, Fatos Zeqiri, who started last season at Brentwood Town, fired home his second goal of the night for the equaliser.
But Brentwood kept their nerve in the shootout with Brenden Cavalier coolly converting the winning spot kick.
Blues had dominated possession for much of the first half and Brad Hunter had two chances in the first fifteen minutes, but Russell saved well on both occasions.
In the 29th minute Izzy Bademosi hit a post and Russell saved again from Shomari Barnwell’s fierce follow-up attempt. Russell then stopped a long-range effort from Matt Hall before Hunter finally headed Brentwood ahead from a Jack Gardner cross in the 33rd minute.
Three minutes after half time, Badmosi scored from a Barnwell cross but Zaqiri kept the tie alive two minutes later capitalising on an error in the Blues defence to make the score 1-2.
Jack Gardner restored the two-goal margin in the 73rd minute, starting a run from just inside the West Essex half, he cut inside and drove a left foot shot inside the near post. That looked to have settled the tie until that late drama unfolded.
