Sunday 7th March
EASTERN JUNIOR ALLIANCE (Under 15 Suffolk Division)
CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS 1 BRENTWOOD TOWN 3
Brentwood U15’s (Suffolk) returned to winning ways and kept their title bid firmly on track with a battling win against an improved Cambridge University Press at Sedley Road, Cambridge on Sunday.
On a half-decent, expansive pitch under a blue and near-cloudless sky, the canary-yellow shirted Town put aside their recent cup disappointment to produce some of the best press-pass-play football of the season, despite conceding a goal in the first minutes of the match.
Just as they had in the corresponding fixture at the Brentwood Centre only a few weeks ago, Brentwood’s defence, statistically the best across all divisions, was caught out by a low cross into the box from the right and the resultant loose ball fell to a Cambridge striker who gratefully fired the ball past Charlie Thackeray to give the hosts the early lead.
Within minutes Brentwood had levelled through a Pierce Bogard strike but were limited to the single goal at the break despite playing some decent football against a doggedly determined Cambridge.
Both teams started the second period looking to stamp their authority on the game. But it was Brentwood who were enjoying the majority of the possession and it was they who looked the more likely to take the lead.
With Ryan ‘Rocky’ O’Mahoney withdrawn following an off-the-ball skirmish, Jack Robson reprised his role as tormentor-in-chief on the left flank and again, as in the previous meeting, proved too tricky for the hosts defence.
With a growing feeling of deja vu, Brentwood began to sense that the game, and all three points, were theirs for the taking. Bogard added to his earlier goal and might have grabbed a few more with just a little more composure and luck in front of goal. With the home side visibly tiring, Town increased the pressure and their efforts were rewarded in the dying minutes when a Henry Russell ball found Josh Bardouleau on the edge of the box and his finish put the game beyond doubt.
