Brentwood Town: Moore, Cavalier, Sampayo, Owusu (Greenslade 78), Rees, Burgess, Reynolds, Ngandu (Hall 78), Scarlett (Zeqeri 90), H. Georgiou, Freeman.
Brentwood’s improvement continued as they picked up their fourth point from two games over the Bank Holiday weekend. In a highly entertaining, open game Blues were frustrated in the end not to pick up another win after a dominant second half.
With this being the second game in three days, Manager Tony Ievoli again rotated his squad with three changes in the back four - Billy Rees, Luke Foster and John Burgess all returning – and Shad Ngandu and Harrrison Georgiou in the starting line-up along with debutant striker Tyrone Scarlett.
The game began with some end-to-end exchanges setting the pattern for the whole 90 minutes. Brendan Cavalier made a good covering tackle on Swifts’ Reece Grant in the second minute and Blues goalkeeper Lewis Moore punched away a dangerous free kick from George Cole while at the other end Scarlett and Andy Freeman both had shots on target that were easily dealt with by home keeper Danny Sambridge.
Freeman again shot straight at Sambridge from a 20th minute free kick awarded after Sam Owusu was pulled back on the edge of the area.
Heybridge took the lead in the 25th minute when Callum Leahy scored with a header from a Cole free kick. And for a few minutes the Blues were struggling as the home side threatened to extend their lead with Moore coming out to make a fine block on Cole as he bore down on goal.
When Lamar Reynolds looked likely to equalise for Brentwood, Heybridge were saved by a fine tackle by Marvel Ekpiteta.
Moore was in action again just before half time, saving well from Joe Paxman on this occasion.
Six minutes into the second half, Georgiou shot wide from a good position after an assist from Scarlett and as Blues kept the pressure on the home defence, Sambridge made a wonderful save to keep out an effort from Freeman that was heading for the top corner of the goal. Scarlett then had the best chance so far but fired past the Heybridge upright.
Sambridge saved well again, this time from Georgiou after a fine move by Brentwood and the pressure eventually told in the 70th minute when Reynolds volleyed home from 12 yards following a cross from the right wing by Ngandu.
Ievoli introduced three subs in the later stages, Matt Hall, Andy Greenslade and Fatos Zeqeri coming on as Blues continued to look for a winning goal, the nearest they came was a header from Georgiou that was straight into the arms of Sambridge.
