Overview
Ollie Canfer headed in an 89th minute winner as Bury Town edged past Brentwood at The Arena on Saturday.
Blues had to make an enforced change after goalkeeper Lewis Moore had moved on to Canvey Island during the week so there was a debut for another young keeper, James Macree, who made a good impression with some confident handling.
Bury Town, who have lost just once in the league this season, moved up to second place in the Ryman North table following this win but they must have considered themselves somewhat fortunate to leave the Arena with all three points.
Tony Ievoli's Brentwood were the better side in the first half. Captain Sam Owusu clipped the post with a looping cross before winger Andy Freeman had a shot cleared off the line.
Nick Ingram created Bury’s best chance of the half but Luke Reed blazed it over from close range.
Brentwood’s danger man Lamar Reynolds had a free-kick tipped around the post and was denied a further two times after linking up well with Shad Ngandu.
Canfer kept Brentwood on their toes with a couple of earlier chances before eventually breaking the deadlock with a minute to go, towering above the defence to convert Remi Garrett’s pin-point delivery.
Ievoli told local radio station Phoenix FM: “Football can sometimes be very cruel. We did so many things well today and the result was not a reflection of the way the game went. We are on the right track and we will stick with it and keep learning”.
