Overview
Soham’s Adrian Cambridge’s scored direct from a first half free kick for the decisive goal in what turned into a feisty relegation battle at the Brentwood Arena.
Soham had put some pressure on the home defence from some long throws early in the first half but Brentwood had a good chance when Kieran English headed wide from a Matt Hall cross in 20th minute.
Anthony Page saved from Luke Brown just before Cambridge’s free kick from the left wing found its way into the far corner in the 37th minute.
Brown hit the Brentwood crossbar with a spectacular effort in the 43rd minute but the Blues started the second half very strongly. Lamar Reynolds hit a post but English’s follow-up header was ruled out for offside.
Niall Conroy then saved well from Andy Freeman and when English was bundled over in the area, Reynolds had a chance to equalise from the penalty spot but Conroy saved his kick.
Conroy then came out to deny Reynolds again half way through the second half but Blues hopes had been hit further by a second yellow card for Nick Hilder, which meant they were down to ten men for the last 30 minutes. Soham saw the game out to move one point ahead of Brentwood, leaving the Blues still in danger of finishing in the Ryman North bottom three.
