Leaders of the Isthmian Premier, Brentwood Town, face third bottom of the league Welling United in the first round of the Isuzu FA Trophy. It’s been a great start to the season so far for Town, and they’ll be looking to have another memorable run in this competition.
The Blues
Brentwood were in BBC Essex Senior Cup action last time out against Brightlingsea Regent. They were victorious in dramatic fashion, winning 3-2 with a stoppage time goal.
George Dyle opened the scoring early for the visitors, but Daniel Ogunleye equalised shortly afterwards with his 7th of the season. Charlie Durling got the next goal of the match with just 20 minutes to go, but again Brentwood hit back through Benas Vaivada just 6 minutes later.
The game wasn’t over there as Charlie Edwards found the net in the 92nd minute to send the Blues through to the next round. Sitting top of the league, and still in two cup competitions it’s been a very successful start to the season for the Blues, but progression in this match is key to keep the momentum going.
The Wings
Welling United have not had the start they would have wanted, having picked up 9 points in the opening 12 matches. They’re out of the other cup competitions, so will be desperate to progress into the next round of the Trophy.
In their last match, the Wings lost 2-1 to Cray Valley PM in the London Senior Cup. Emmanuel Adebiyi scored for the hosts in the 4th minute, Fumnaya Shomotun getting the Cray Valley second just 11 minutes later. There was a late consolation for Logan Dobbs, but it wasn't enough.
John Ufuah is one to watch for the visitors, with three goals so far this season, and has been an important player for Welling.
Final Word
With the memorable run in this competition last season, playing National League side Southend United, Keith Rowland’s side will be keen to qualify for the second round. Welling will make it difficult for them though, and it should be a competitive game
