BLUES LEFT FRUSTRATED AFTER SECOND-HALF DOMINANCE AT THREE BRIDGES

Brentwood Town were left frustrated after being held to a 1-1 draw by Three Bridges at Jubilee Field on Saturday, despite producing a dominant second-half display and creating several opportunities to take all three points.

The Blues fell behind against the run of play after 12 minutes when Ade Adeyinka fired the hosts into the lead with a powerful strike from the edge of the area. However, Brentwood responded positively and continued to press for an equaliser, with Harry Gibbs coming closest in the first half when his header struck the post.

A much-improved second-half performance saw Brett Munyard’s side turn up the pressure, and their persistence was rewarded on 58 minutes when returning defender Gibbs found the net to bring the scores level. From that point onwards, Brentwood looked the more likely side to find a winner, with Alfie Cerulli, Nat Mardell and substitute Freddie Sears all going close during an increasingly one-sided spell.

Sears came agonisingly close to completing the comeback in the closing stages, but was unable to convert Malachi Linton’s low delivery from close range.

The afternoon ended in controversial circumstances when captain Matt Cripps was shown a straight red card in stoppage time following handball appeals from the hosts. The decision prompted considerable confusion, with the referee initially allowing play to continue before eventually awarding a foul and dismissing the Brentwood skipper. The Blues were reduced to 10 men for the closing moments, but neither side could find a decisive breakthrough.

Brett Munyard made three changes to the starting XI that featured in Tuesday night’s defeat against Leatherhead, with Gibbs and Max Hudson returning from injury, while Wyan Reid also came into the side.

Brentwood made a bright start and looked the more threatening of the two sides during the opening exchanges. Nat Mardell was first to test Sam Roberts, forcing the Three Bridges goalkeeper into a fine save with a strike from distance after the hosts surrendered possession outside their own area.

Alfie Cerulli also saw an effort blocked inside the box before the ball fell invitingly for Luke Read, who could only drag his subsequent attempt wide.

However, despite Brentwood’s promising start, it was Three Bridges who broke the deadlock on 12 minutes. A well-worked move through the middle saw Adeyinka collect possession before unleashing a powerful drive from the edge of the area, leaving Aiden Prall with little chance as the ball flew into the net.

The Blues looked to respond and came close to finding an equaliser when George Saunders’ low delivery picked out Mardell at the back post, but his effort was excellently blocked by Josh Hallard and diverted behind for a corner.

The resulting delivery caused further problems for the hosts, with Gibbs meeting the ball with a header at the back post, only to see his effort crash against the upright.

Brentwood suffered another injury setback on the half-hour mark when Jayden Robinson was forced off, with Charlie Edwards introduced in a like-for-like change.

Three Bridges enjoyed a spell of possession as the first half progressed, but struggled to create anything of real substance. Their best opportunity since the opener came when Bryan Villavicencio delivered into the area, with Reece Hallard directing his header wide of Prall’s goal.

The Blues continued to look for a way back into the contest, and Max Hudson produced some excellent skill down the left flank before delivering into the path of captain Matt Cripps. The midfielder advanced towards the edge of the area before unleashing a strike that sailed just over the crossbar.

Brentwood started the second half with renewed purpose and immediately looked to put the hosts under pressure.

Hudson continued to provide a threat from set pieces, with an early corner finding Read, who rose highest inside the area but could only direct his header wide.

The Blues continued to push forward and were handed another opportunity on 56 minutes when Cripps was fouled down the right-hand side, earning a free-kick in a promising position.

With Three Bridges temporarily reduced to 10 players as Velvick received treatment off the pitch, Brentwood looked to take advantage and eventually found their breakthrough two minutes later.

Reid delivered into the area, with Cerulli getting a touch towards goal before the hosts failed to clear their lines. The loose ball fell invitingly for Gibbs, who made no mistake in slotting his effort into the bottom corner to bring Brentwood level on 58 minutes.

The equaliser sparked an immediate response from the hosts, with Charlie Bennett getting beyond Cripps inside the area, but he could only fire his effort wide of the far post.

Brentwood quickly regained control and began to turn the pressure up another notch. Cerulli drove towards the area before firing over the crossbar, while Mardell also found himself with an opportunity shortly afterwards but was unable to keep his effort down.

The Blues were now creating chances at regular intervals and won another dangerous free-kick on 66 minutes after Cerulli was brought down just outside the area.

The forward stepped up to take responsibility and produced a low, powerful strike which Roberts did well to parry away.

Three Bridges struggled to contain Brentwood’s attacking threat, with the visitors continuing to look for a winner. A promising counter-attack involving Cerulli, Mardell and substitute Malachi Linton almost produced another opportunity, but Linton was unable to stretch far enough to connect with Mardell’s low delivery.

Brentwood continued to threaten from set pieces, with Hudson once again delivering an excellent ball into the area following a foul on Reid. Gibbs met the cross with a header from close range but could only flash his effort wide.

Substitute Freddie Sears then found himself through on goal after Three Bridges surrendered possession, but Roberts stood firm to deny the forward and keep the scores level.

The Blues came agonisingly close to finding a winner in the closing stages. Once again, loose possession from the hosts allowed Brentwood to break forward, with Cerulli driving down the right before Linton delivered a low cross into the area.

Sears arrived to meet the delivery and looked set to turn the ball into an unguarded net, but the cross was slightly behind him and he was unable to make the required connection. It was a huge opportunity for the visitors, who had looked increasingly likely to complete the turnaround.

However, the closing moments were overshadowed by a controversial decision involving Cripps.

Following a clearance from Three Bridges, the ball appeared to bounce up and strike the Brentwood captain’s arm. The contact looked entirely unintentional, and despite strong appeals from the hosts, the referee initially allowed play to continue.

After a significant delay, the official eventually awarded a foul and produced a straight red card for Cripps, leaving the Brentwood players and supporters puzzled by the decision. The assistant referee had not appeared to signal for an infringement either, adding to the confusion surrounding the late dismissal.

Reduced to 10 men for the final moments, the Blues were unable to find one last opportunity to snatch a winner, and the points were shared at Jubilee Field.

Despite the frustration of not turning their second-half dominance into all three points, Brentwood will take encouragement from their response after the break and the return of Gibbs to the scoresheet.

The Blues are back in league action next Saturday when they welcome Ramsgate to The Arena.
