NEW SALAMIS 1 – 0 BRENTWOOD TOWN

A penalty midway through the first half saw Brentwood beaten at Haringey Borough Stadium on Wednesday. The home side, newly promoted to the Isthmian North division, looked a well-organised outfit with striker Pap Jawara causing the Brentwood defence a lot of problems in the early stages and it was Jawara who gave New Salamis the lead in the 22nd minute, converting from the spot after he was brought down by Chris Gregan.

Brentwood were hampered by the late arrival of some players due to torrential rain and widespread flooding in much of Essex and North London. However, the visitors were nearly level in the 29th minute when Jai Reason found Andy Freeman whose shot was tipped over the crossbar by Salamis’ goalkeeper Emmanuel Olajide.

It was a highly competitive match with a total of seven yellow cards, five for the visitors, and Brentwood were left frustrated as they could not force an equaliser despite a lot of late pressure on the home goal. Just one point from the opening two league games for Brentwood but they will be looking to get back to winning ways when the league programme resumes on Saturday week when the visit Grays Athletic. Before then, it is the FA Cup on Saturday with Harlow Town the visitors to the Arena this Saturday.

Brentwood Town: 1 Harry Girling, 2 Josh Gray, 3 Andrew Freeman (Jack Humphrey 52'), 4 Chris Gregan, 5 Charlie Kendall, 6 Callum Leahy, 17 Matt Price, 8 Connor Hogan (Sam Park 58'), 9 Tom Richardson, 10 Jai Reason, 11 David Knight (Kane Phillip 52').
