Meet Barry Hearn OBE at Brentwood  Town FC – A Champion for Community and Men's Health

Brentwood Town Football Club is proud to invite fans, locals, and media to a special Prostate Cancer Screening Event on 9 July 2025, organised by CHAPS Men’s Health Charity.

There will also be an opportunity to meet Barry Hearn OBE, legendary sports promoter and founder of Matchroom Sport, an enthusiastic supporter of grassroots football and minority stakeholder in Brentwood Town FC. Matchroom Sport also proudly sponsors Brentwood Town FC’s home and away shirts, showcasing Barry’s deep connection to the club.

In addition to his contributions to sport, Barry Hearn is also raising awareness for men’s health following his own diagnosis with prostate problems. After undergoing successful surgery in late 2024, he is encouraging men across the UK to get regular health checks and speak openly about the importance of early detection of Prostate Cancer.

Barry Hearn OBE said: “Now, I want to use my voice to urge men to take their health seriously. Take this opportunity and book yourself on for a test at Brentwood FC, it is a simple blood test and could save your life!”

Professor Chris Booth, Clinical Director and CHAPS founder, commented: “Prostate Cancer is now the commonest major cancer in UK men and the second commonest cancer killer now causing 57,000 new cases and 13,000 deaths each year. A national screening programme could halve this death rate.

“Prostate Cancer usually grows slowly and causes no symptoms till it has spread. That is why screening needs to be done before symptoms arise. As 1 in 4 men with an abnormal PSA will have Prostate Cancer, this event could potentially save three or four lives through early detection of this silent killer.”

Prostate cancer is a significant cause of premature death among men in the UK contributing to the total of 70,000 men who die prematurely each year; this is one and a half times the rate for women. Many of these deaths are preventable and prostate cancer is a significant contributor to these unnecessary deaths. “

The event takes place on Wednesday 9th July at Brentwood Town FC from 10am-2pm. Bookings can be made via the CHAPS website – www.chaps.uk.com/events
