đ Match Preview
It is the big one. Billericay Town vs Brentwood Town. The Isthmian Premier Division Play-Off Final. One team is now ninety minutes from playing National League South football next season.
Both sides claimed one victory over the other in the regular season, Brentwood taking a 3-0 win in the match at the Arena, with Billericay claiming a 1-0 win in the more recent meeting at New Lodge, the venue for today’s Final.
The Blues
Brentwood made it to the final thanks to a 4-1 win over Essex rivals Aveley, with three very late goals securing their place.
Keith Rowlandâs tricky tangos showed their dominance in the first half, but the Millers were able to keep them out until the 76th minute when Bradley Sach put them in front, sending the away end into raptures.
Jesse Nwabueze then equalised ten minutes after with a stunning finish from the edge of the box, but following a handball in the box Brentwood were awarded a penalty in the 97th minute, which Ade Cole slotted into the top right corner to restore the lead.
Jesse Olukolu and Louie Johnson then set each other up to secure the result, Johnson scoring the third with an Olukolu assist, before Johnson provided Olukolu for the fourth. Whatever happens, the Blues will be proud with how far they have made it this year, only returning to life at Step 3 this year.
Ricay
Billericayâs route to the final also contained some level of drama, a comfortable first half for Danny Scopesâ side, but a concerning second half in which Chatham Town came close to drawing level.
Within 41 minutes, the home side had a 3-0 lead, Jon Benton, Frankie Merrifield and Keon Lewis-Burgess scoring the three goals, however the Chats had one back before the break, Sam Sene-Richardson scoring in the 44th minute.
Kian Moynes then scored in the 70th minute, putting Billericay only one up with twenty minutes left, but thankfully for the Blues, they held on setting up this all-Essex play-off final.
One to watch in this game is Merrifield, who scored in the semi-final and has netted 16 times this season in all competitions. Alfie Cerulli is another dangerous player that Brentwood will need to keep quiet, but with lots of attacking quality on both sides, it has all the makings of an absolute classic.
Final Word
A game that will be remembered for years to come, between two sides who have had absolutely fantastic seasons. Scopesâ Billericay side have the better form, but Rowlandâs Tangos will take all the confidence from their late goals against Aveley.
It all comes down to this, with everything on the line for both sides. Will it be Billericay making a return to the National League South after four seasons away, or can Brentwood move to the highest level they have ever played at?
