Match Report: Chatham Town (H)

Both Brentwood Town and Chatham Town were forced to settle for a point on Saturday, with neither side able to break the deadlock in what proved to be a “must not lose” encounter.

Both teams entered the game knowing the importance of victory. For Brentwood, three points would have seen them climb back into third place, while Chatham had the chance to strengthen their position and edge closer to securing a play-off spot.

Keith Rowland made three changes to the side that lost to Folkestone Invicta the previous weekend. Wyan Reid returned for his first appearance after serving a two-match suspension, while Ade Cole and Benas Vaivada also came into the starting XI, the latter making his first start since 31st January.

Brentwood began brightly and showed early intent when Bradley Sach delivered a dangerous cross that was nearly met by Alejandro Machado, only for Nathan Harvey to produce a stretching save. Machado was involved again soon after, as Vaivada dispossessed Sid Nelson and drove into the box before picking out Machado, whose effort drifted agonisingly wide of the left post.

As expected, Chatham enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, but Brentwood looked dangerous on the counter whenever the visitors gave the ball away. Danny Ogunleye came close next, his cross-shot flashing through the box and narrowly past the far post, leaving Harvey scrambling.

Despite Brentwood’s threat, it was Chatham who carved out the best chance of the first half on 30 minutes. A quick free-kick routine released Tope Fadahunsi one-on-one with Aiden Prall, but the Brentwood goalkeeper stood tall to make an important save.

That moment did little to disrupt Brentwood’s rhythm, as they continued to defend resolutely while posing problems at the other end. Vaivada saw a shot on the turn deflected safely into Harvey’s hands, before Machado, one of the standout performers in the first half, curled another effort just wide when it looked destined for the top corner.

The second half saw Chatham begin to create more opportunities, with Matt Macarthur a constant threat, delivering dangerous balls into the area whenever given the chance.

In a game played on a knife-edge, clear-cut chances remained limited. Junior Dixon tested Prall from distance, but the Brentwood stopper was alert and made a comfortable save.

The defining moments came late on, with both sides’ substitutes going close, and both goalkeepers proving decisive. First, Nile Ranger, fresh off the bench, saw his close-range effort brilliantly saved by Prall.

Then came Brentwood’s best chance of the match. Ogunleye’s inviting cross was met by Kymani Thomas, who beat his marker and curled a low effort towards goal. It looked destined for the net, only for Harvey to produce a remarkable save and somehow keep the scores level.

With neither side able to find a breakthrough, both had to settle for a point. Chatham remain third, while Brentwood drop to fifth, with Billericay Town’s win moving them up to fourth ahead of next weekend’s trip to Burgess Hill Town.

The play-offs remain firmly in Brentwood’s hands, and they will look to make up ground following two tough back-to-back home fixtures.
