Aveley vs Brentwood Town – Match Preview

Club News | 6 Aug 2025

The season begins with an Essex derby.

Brentwood Town kick off their 2025/26 campaign with a Friday night trip to local rivals Aveley, marking their return to the Isthmian Premier Division after a decade away. With pre-season behind them and momentum from last year’s title win, the Blues are aiming to make a strong start.

The Blues

After securing the Isthmian North title last season, Brentwood Town have retained the core of their squad – a major boost for manager Keith Rowland. Crucially, prolific striker Daniel Ogunleye (43 goals last season) and defender Romel Aarons Royal remain at the club.

The Blues have also strengthened smartly, bringing in a mix of experience and flair with new signings Aron Pollock, Max Hudson, Louie Johnson, Charlie Edwards, Manny Ogunrinde, Kymani Thomas and Charlee Hughes – many of whom have solid Step 3 or higher experience.

Brentwood had a solid pre-season, winning five of eight games and testing themselves against League One and National League South opposition. Most importantly, the majority of the squad have come through injury-free.

With momentum, a settled core, and quality additions, Brentwood will aim not just to survive, but to establish themselves at Step 3 this season.

Manager Keith Rowland said “It is a good opening game, it’s an Essex derby. Everyone wants a good start, there’s no doubt about that, but this league, like any league, isn't a sprint, it’s a marathon.

"It’s an away game, every point is precious. We’re probably hoping for a good crowd on the night, whether it’s a home crowd or hopefully a good away support. Our fans were excellent away from home last season and we hope that carries on. We're going to go there and show Aveley the utmost respect.”

The Millers

Aveley endured a tough 2024/25 campaign, finishing bottom of the National League South. In response, they’ve made sweeping changes – appointing Brett Munyard as manager and overhauling their squad.

New signings include Jaden Brissett, Joseph Boachie, Albie Armin, Jayden Gipson, Harry Critchley and Ryan Henshaw. Forward Rowan Liburd has been among the goals in pre-season and will be a key threat on Friday night.

Munyard is aiming for a swift return to Step 2 and has spoken about implementing a more expansive, attacking style of play. Many of the new arrivals are defenders and midfielders, suggesting a tactical shift focused on controlling possession and building from the back.

One to watch is Jayden Gipson – a centre-back who joined from Cambridge City, scoring eight goals in 44 appearances last season. He could be a key figure in the Millers’ rebuild.

Final Word

An exciting Essex derby under the lights kicks off the new season, with both teams eager to make a statement. For Brentwood, it’s about proving they belong at this level. For Aveley, it’s the first step on the road to redemption.
