ROMFORD 1 – 4 BRENTWOOD TOWN

A Charlee Hughes hat-trick against local rivals Romford on Wednesday night inspired Brentwood to their first away league win of the season.

At Romford’s home venue of East Thurrock United FC, Hughes put the visitors ahead in the seventh minute sweeping home when Alfie Hilton returned the ball into the area after a corner had been partially cleared.

Tony Stokes made it 2-0 on 23 minutes with a fine strike across goal following another corner. Just after the half hour mark, Hughes was denied by Boro goalkeeper Rhys Hughes after a penetrating run from Kojo Apenteng had created the opening.

Brentwood continued to dominate with Hughes a constant threat and the striker created a further chance five minutes before half time when his surging run down the right saw his low cross just elude both Apenteng and Hilton in front of goal.

The home side improved in the second half, but they were down to ten men from the 51st minute when Danny Cossington saw a second yellow card. However, Romford were back in the game just two minutes later when Nick Reynolds coolly converted to make the score 2-1.

Hughes re-established the two-goal lead in the 73rd minute scoring from close range into the roof of the net. Brentwood were then also reduced to ten men when Ryan Mallett was red-carded for a foul.

Hughes then had the last word when Brentwood broke away in the first minute of stoppage time and Levett set up the chance for Hughes to fire home his third goal, his ninth of the season.

Brentwood Town: Pellin, Hilton (Fox 46), Apenteng, Carter, Gordon, Levett, Smith (Martin 71), Mallett, Stokes (Littlejohn 81), Hughes, Hurford.
