Step 3 secured, but the dream is still alive.
Louie Johnson and Bradley Sach strike in a ruthless minute to turn it around after Loic Hernandez’s opener, sealing a vital away win that guarantees Brentwood Town’s Step 3 status – with eyes still firmly fixed on promotion to Step 2.
Brentwood Town travelled in their away Tango strip knowing the stakes – and after 90 hard-fought minutes and without top goalscorer Danny Ogunleye, they left having mathematically secured their Step 3 status for another season.
It was a rocky start for the visitors. Early pressure from Wingate & Finchley, built on a succession of corners, eventually told in the 13th minute. Ryan Lowe’s pinpoint delivery was met by Loic Hernandez, who rose above Andy Freeman and Charlie Edwards to power a header beyond Aiden Prall and hand the hosts the lead.
The setback was familiar territory for the Tangos, who have made a habit of responding to adversity this season – and respond they did.
Just ten minutes later, Brentwood were level. A quick throw-in from Kymani Thomas caught Wingate off guard, with Edwards picking out Bradley Sach inside the area. The striker held the ball up superbly before laying it into the path of Louie Johnson, who fired a first-time effort low and hard into the bottom corner, giving Charlie Grainger no chance.
Brentwood weren’t done though.
Straight from the restart, clever link-up play between Sach and Aaron Sterling led to Brentwood winning a corner. Thomas played it short to Sterling, whose cross to the back post was expertly controlled by Sach. One touch to set himself, another to poke home. Two goals in the space of a minute had completely turned the contest on its head, leaving Wingate shellshocked and Brentwood firmly in control.
Chances were limited for the remainder of the half, though Thomas nearly added a third with a trademark burst down the left before curling narrowly over. Alejandro Machado also came close after Matt Cripps’ long ball caught Grainger flat-footed, but his audacious effort drifted just over the empty side of the goal.
After the restart, Brentwood continued to push. Johnson twice went close – first from distance after more fine work from Thomas, then from a tight angle inside the box.
The visitors were nearly punished for a rare lapse, however. A miscommunication following a back pass allowed Ryan Lowe the chance to shoot from long range with the goal at his mercy, but the midfielder – who scored in the reverse fixture – could only fire over. A major let-off.
From there, the game became about control. Brentwood managed proceedings expertly, nullifying any real threat. In truth, Prall was not required to make a save of note as the back line stood resolute.
There was still time for one final opportunity, substitute Benas Vaivada played through by Machado before seeing his curling effort well held by Grainger.
Wingate struggled to break through, and deep into stoppage time referee Christopher Poole brought an end to proceedings.
A huge win on the road – one that guarantees Brentwood Town will be playing Step 3 football again next season at minimum, marking their highest-ever finish and a remarkable achievement in their first year back at this level in a decade.
But with nine games remaining, the job is far from done. The play-off push – and the dream of Step 2 football – remains very much alive.
