BBC ESSEX SENIOR CUP QUARTER FINAL
AFC HORNCHURCH 1 – 1 BRENTWOOD TOWN
(AFC Hornchurch won 4-2 penalties)

After 90 minutes of football that saw each team score from the penalty spot, this county cup quarter final was decided by a penalty shootout that resulted in the home side progressing to the semi-final.

The Urchins certainly had the better chances in the first half and led through George Purcell’s 28th minute penalty, awarded after Lee Prescott had been fouled in the area.

Brentwood were much better in the second half and went close to equalising in the 68th minute when Hornchurch keeper saved a fierce shot from Ryan Mallett. But blues were level three minutes later, Tony Stokes scoring from the penalty spot after a handball infringement.

In the shootout, Hornchurch had 100% success with their kicks, but it was level until Charlee Hughes was unlucky to see his effort hit the crossbar. Jack Gardner then missed his kick and Hornchurch were through to a semi-final at Chelmsford City.

Brentwood Town: Budd, Smith, Martin, Carter, Littlejohn, Mallett, Hilton (Gardner 79), Hunter (Hurford 75), Doyle (Apenteng 65), Hughes, Stokes.
